1 From Triad to Seventh Chord

Vom Dreiklang zum Septakkord

Add one more note to a triad – a third above the fifth – and you get a seventh chord. There are three types you will meet in almost every song.

Ein Septakkord ist ein Dreiklang mit zusätzlicher Septime.

C7 – dominant seventh

Cmaj7 – major seventh

Cm7 – minor seventh

Moll-Septakkord

Quick rule: “7” alone means a minor seventh (C7 = B♭). “maj7” means a major seventh (Cmaj7 = B). The highlighted note is the seventh.
„7“ = kleine Septime · „maj7“ = große Septime

4 Why Singers Need This

Warum das für Sängerinnen und Sänger wichtig ist

Richer sound

Seventh chords make simple accompaniments sound fuller and more modern.

Leading the ear

A dominant seventh tells listeners – and singers – that home is coming.

Jazz and pop

Ballads and jazz standards use maj7 and m7 chords all the time.

Hear it, name it, play it.
Play each chord slowly, say its name in English, then sing along.
Langsam spielen, auf Englisch benennen, mitsingen.
