Schwa & Word Stress: 100 More English Words — Part 2

(Schwa & Wortbetonung: 100 weitere englische Wörter — Teil 2)

Practise 100 new words with British English pronunciation and compare them with German.

(Übe 100 neue Wörter mit britischer Aussprache und vergleiche sie mit Deutsch.)

CAPITALS show the main stressed syllable. Burgundy letters show schwa /ə/. Say the schwa softly and briefly.

(GROSSBUCHSTABEN zeigen die hauptsächlich betonte Silbe. Burgunderrote Buchstaben zeigen Schwa /ə/. Sprich Schwa kurz und entspannt.)

The other syllables alternate between teal and purple. Dots separate the written sections used to represent spoken syllables.

(Die übrigen Silben wechseln zwischen Petrol und Violett. Punkte trennen die Schreibabschnitte, mit denen gesprochene Silben dargestellt werden.)

German stress is underlined. German translations and explanations are 75% of the corresponding English text size.

(Die deutsche Betonung ist unterstrichen. Deutsche Übersetzungen und Erklärungen haben 75 % der Schriftgröße des jeweiligen englischen Textes.)

NAtion  —  Nation

Compare NA-tion in English with Na-TION in German. The English o is schwa; the German ending is stressed.

(Vergleiche NA-tion im Englischen mit Na-TION im Deutschen. Das englische o ist Schwa; im Deutschen ist die Endung betont.)

The colour marks the vowel spelling, sometimes two letters, associated with /ə/. This is a pronunciation aid, not normal spelling or a rule for written hyphenation.

(Die Farbe markiert die Vokalschreibung, manchmal zwei Buchstaben, die zu /ə/ gehört. Dies ist eine Aussprachehilfe, keine normale Schreibweise und keine Regel zur schriftlichen Worttrennung.)

Words 1–50

Read the English word aloud, then compare its stress with the underlined German syllable.

(Lies das englische Wort laut und vergleiche seine Betonung mit der unterstrichenen deutschen Silbe.)

The IPA below each English word shows one British pronunciation. The colour system marks schwa as an unstressed vowel; schwa-like elements within diphthongs are not separately coloured. Secondary stress is not capitalised.

(Die Lautschrift unter jedem englischen Wort zeigt eine britische Aussprache. Das Farbsystem markiert Schwa als unbetonten Vokal; schwaähnliche Bestandteile von Diphthongen werden nicht einzeln eingefärbt. Nebenbetonung wird nicht großgeschrieben.)

Pronunciation varies. Some weak vowels can disappear or become syllabic consonants. Temperature and literature are shown with careful, fuller pronunciations; shorter forms are common.

(Die Aussprache variiert. Manche schwachen Vokale können wegfallen oder durch silbische Konsonanten ersetzt werden. Temperature und literature werden in sorgfältigen, ausführlicheren Varianten gezeigt; kürzere Formen sind verbreitet.)

Final r is not pronounced in the selected British accent when the word is spoken alone. It may be pronounced before a following vowel.

(Ein abschließendes r wird im gewählten britischen Akzent beim einzeln gesprochenen Wort nicht ausgesprochen. Vor einem folgenden Vokal kann es hörbar werden.)

Document and register are nouns here; separate is an adjective; musical is an adjective; bachelor refers to an academic degree. Other meanings and word classes may have different pronunciations or translations.

(Document und register sind hier Substantive; separate und musical sind Adjektive; bachelor bezeichnet einen akademischen Abschluss. Andere Bedeutungen und Wortarten können andere Aussprachen oder Übersetzungen haben.)

Similar spelling does not always mean identical meaning. The German column includes related words and common translations; some related German terms are technical or uncommon. Direction usually means Richtung; decision usually means Entscheidung.

(Ähnliche Schreibweise bedeutet nicht immer gleiche Bedeutung. Die deutsche Spalte enthält verwandte Wörter und gebräuchliche Übersetzungen; manche verwandten deutschen Begriffe sind fachsprachlich oder selten. Direction bedeutet meist Richtung; decision bedeutet meist Entscheidung.)

Portuguese uses the European variety. Translation columns show selected meanings and do not mark stress in Spanish, French, Portuguese or Italian.

(Portugiesisch verwendet die europäische Variante. Die Übersetzungsspalten zeigen ausgewählte Bedeutungen und markieren keine Betonung in Spanisch, Französisch, Portugiesisch oder Italienisch.)

Practise each word three times: slowly, with a clear beat on the CAPITAL syllable, then naturally.

(Übe jedes Wort dreimal: langsam, mit einem deutlichen Akzent auf der GROSSGESCHRIEBENEN Silbe und anschließend natürlich.)
