Final Voiced Consonants: Bad or Bat? Rise or Rice?

Keep the difference at the end of the word, where English needs it most.

In English, bad and bat, rise and rice, leave and leaf are different words. The difference is at the very end, and many learners lose it. The secret is not only the consonant, but the vowel before it.

Why the End of the Word Matters

Many languages don't allow voiced consonants at the end of a word. English does, and it uses them to tell words apart.

1Voiced and voiceless

A voiced consonant uses your voice: put your hand on your throat and say /zzz/. You feel a buzz. A voiceless consonant has no buzz: /sss/.

VoicedVoicelessExample pair
/b//p/cab – cap
/d//t/bad – bat
/ɡ//k/bag – back
/v//f/leave – leaf
/z//s/rise – rice
/dʒ//tʃ/badge – batch
/ð//θ/teethe – teeth

2Who finds this difficult?

German, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Turkish and Catalan speakers, whose languages make final consonants voiceless. In German this is called Auslautverhärtung: Rad and Rat sound the same. Speakers of Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish and Italian may also drop or soften final consonants.

The Vowel Trick

English speakers hear the difference mainly in the length of the vowel before the consonant.

1Long before voiced, short before voiceless

In English, a vowel is longer before a voiced consonant and shorter before a voiceless one. Native speakers often devoice the final consonant a little themselves, so the vowel length is what listeners really hear.

Longer vowelShorter vowel
bad /bæd/bat /bæt/
rise /raɪz/rice /raɪs/
leave /liːv/leaf /liːf/
dog /dɒɡ/dock /dɒk/
prize /praɪz/price /praɪs/
bag /bæɡ/back /bæk/

Tip: Say the voiced word as if you were slightly surprised: ba-a-d! Then make the voiceless word short and sharp: bat.

2Don't add a vowel

Some learners try to keep the voice by adding a small vowel at the end: dog-uh, bad-uh. Avoid this. End cleanly on the consonant, but keep the vowel before it long.

Minimal Pairs

Read each pair aloud. Make the vowel in the left column clearly longer.

When Grammar Depends on It

In some word families, the final sound shows whether the word is a noun or a verb.

Noun (voiceless)Verb (voiced)
advice /ədˈvaɪs/advise /ədˈvaɪz/
use /juːs/use /juːz/
belief /bɪˈliːf/believe /bɪˈliːv/
house /haʊs/house /haʊz/
excuse /ɪkˈskjuːs/excuse /ɪkˈskjuːz/
proof /pruːf/prove /pruːv/
close (near) /kləʊs/close (shut) /kləʊz/
half /hɑːf/halve /hɑːv/

Also important: plural and verb endings. dogs ends in /z/, and played ends in /d/. Make the vowel before them long too.

Practice Sentences

Read each sentence slowly, then at normal speed. Listen for the long vowels.

1Sentences

  • The dog was bad, but the cat was worse.
  • Please don't leave a leaf on the bed.
  • The price of the prize was a surprise.
  • Use the bag at the back of the cab.
  • I'd like to give you some good advice.
  • His eyes were as cold as ice.

2Tip for German speakers

Tip: Your German habit says: voiced at the end becomes voiceless. In English, think long vowel instead. Bad should sound almost like „bääd“, and bag like „bääg“. Then bat and back stay short.

Long Vowel, Clear Ending

You don't need a perfect voiced consonant. Make the vowel longer before /b, d, ɡ, v, z/, and English listeners will hear the right word.

Bad is long. Bat is short.
