-ed Endings for Spanish Speakers
Learn how to pronounce regular past tense endings clearly: worked, played, wanted.
Why -ed Endings Are Difficult
In English, regular past tense verbs are written with -ed, but they are not always pronounced the same way.
For Spanish speakers, the main challenge is this: the written ending -ed can sound like /t/, /d/ or /ɪd/.
The Three -ed Sounds
1. /t/
Use /t/ after voiceless sounds.
worked walked watched finished2. /d/
Use /d/ after voiced sounds.
played cleaned called loved3. /ɪd/
Use /ɪd/ only after /t/ or /d/.
wanted needed started decidedThe Simple Rule
| Final Sound of Verb | -ed Sound | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Voiceless sound: /p/, /k/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/ | /t/ | helped, walked, laughed, missed, washed, watched |
| Voiced sound: vowels, /b/, /g/, /v/, /z/, /m/, /n/, /l/, /r/ | /d/ | played, robbed, moved, cleaned, called, opened |
| /t/ or /d/ | /ɪd/ | wanted, needed, waited, decided |
Common Problems for Spanish Speakers
Problem 1: Adding an extra syllable
Incorrect: work-ed, watch-ed, miss-ed
Better: worked, watched, missed
Problem 2: Making every ending /ed/
Only verbs ending in /t/ or /d/ take the extra syllable /ɪd/.
wanted = two syllables
worked = one syllable
Problem 3: Final consonants too soft
English final sounds must often be clearer than in Spanish.
Practise: worked, stopped, liked, asked.
