4-Week Accent & Voice Program

4-Week Accent & Voice Program

A practical, daily routine to (1) re-pattern English sounds & rhythm and (2) soften and enrich voice tone through breath and resonance.

How to Use

  • Record day 1, end of week 2, and day 28 (60–90 seconds each).
  • Daily time: 20–25 minutes (weekends = light review).
  • Focus first, then flow: drills → shadowing → real speech.
Target Accent
Choose: General American / Standard British
Core Goal
Clear /r l ð θ/ + steady breath & warm tone
Success Metric
Self-rating + listener feedback + WPM clarity

Daily Micro-Routine ~20–25 min

  1. 3′ Breath & Release: 4-4-6 breathing; jaw/neck/tongue stretch.
  2. 5′ Resonance: hum (m-mm), NG-hums (sing), lip trills → vowels (ma-mo-mu-me-mi) at soft→medium.
  3. 6′ Accent Focus: sounds & minimal pairs; 1 rhythm drill + 1 linking drill.
  4. 5′ Shadowing: imitate 10–20 s of native speech; repeat ×3 (melody + reductions).
  5. 2′ Application: speak 4–6 sentences from your work context.
Timer
Use during resonance or shadowing blocks.

Week 1 — Foundation: Breath, Resonance, Core Vowels

Goal: unlock airflow, reduce throat tension, stabilize forward resonance, and map key English vowels.

Daily Plan (Mon–Fri)
  • Breath & Release (3′): 4-4-6 breathing → gentle yawn-sighs (no push).
  • Resonance (5′): Hum on m → NG-hum (as in “sing”) → glide to ah/ee/oh/oo/uh while keeping the buzz forward.
  • Vowel Accuracy (4′):
    /iː/ sheep – /ɪ/ ship · /e/ bed – /æ/ cat · /ʌ/ cup – /ɑː/ father · /uː/ food – /ʊ/ foot
Speak: “We meet every week; the ship is in the creek.
  • Rhythm (2′): Clap stress: TA-da groups. “I NEED to TALK to SAM this AFTERnoon.
  • Shadowing (5′): News intro or TED clip (10–15 s). Copy melody + reductions, not just words.
  • Apply (1–2′): 4 sentences about your day/work using target vowels.
Key Drills
  • Softness Builder: half-smile reading; “mmm-ah” on one breath → speak a line on that same easy airflow.
  • Clarity Cards: meet/mit, seat/sit, leave/live · bag/beg, bad/bed.
  • Warm-tone Phrase:Thank you for your time today.” (slow, steady, smiling eyes).
Self-Check (Fri)
  • Vowel contrast intelligible at normal speed?
  • Neck/jaw free while speaking?
  • Recording sounds less “throaty,” more “forward”?

Week 2 — Consonant Precision: /r l θ ð v w/ + Linking

Goal: clean consonants without tension; smooth connections between words.

Daily Plan (Mon–Fri)
  • Resonance Warm-up (5′): lip trill → “ma-mo-mu-me-mi” → light sirens (low→mid).
  • Consonants (6′):
/r/: bunched or retroflex, no vowel added (try “r-r-red”).
/l/: tip touches alveolar ridge (“light”, “feel”).
/θ ð/: tongue between teeth (“think”, “this”).
/v/ vs /w/: lower lip–teeth vs rounded glide (“very well”).
    Minimal pairs: light/right, leave/reef, thin/then, vine/wine.
  • Linking & Reductions (3′):Want to → wanna”, “going to → gonna”, “give it to me → givih tuh me”.
  • Shadowing (5′): Short dialogue clip; mimic music of speech.
  • Apply (2′): 4 work phrases with linking: “Could you send it over?” “I’ll take a look at it.
Quick Articulation Tools
  • /r/ smoothness: whisper “rrrr” without adding “uh”; then say “right, road, really”.
  • /θ ð/ clarity: place tongue tip lightly; air should pass noiselessly. “this/that/these/those”.
  • Warm tone line:I appreciate your quick reply.” (gentle onset, no push).
Self-Check (Fri)
  • /r/ without “uh”? /l/ precise? /θ ð/ audible but soft?
  • Linked phrases sound fluid, not choppy?
  • Voice stays easy at higher volume?

Week 3 — Prosody: Stress, Intonation, Pace & Presence

Goal: natural English melody, pleasant pacing, confident but warm presence.

Daily Plan (Mon–Fri)
  • Resonance (5′): NG-hum → vowels on one breath; “mmm-ee / mmm-ah / mmm-oh”.
  • Stress & Melody (6′): Mark focus words: “I NEED to CHECK the REPORT today.” Practice up/downs.
  • Pace & Pauses (3′): Read a paragraph with deliberate commas and full stops. Silence = control.
  • Shadowing (5′): Presenter speech; copy pitch contours and phrase lengths.
  • Apply (2′): 30-sec status update in a warm, calm tone.
Presence Drills
  • Smile Line:Good morning, thanks for being here.” (micro-smile brightens timbre).
  • Color Swaps: Read one sentence as (curious → reassuring → decisive) to expand tone palette.
  • Breath Anchor: Speak only on the out-breath; stop before you run out of air.
Self-Check (Fri)
  • Listeners hear clear focus words per sentence?
  • Speed under control (no rushing on key points)?
  • Tone stays warm even when emphasizing?

Week 4 — Integration: Real-World Tasks & Performance

Goal: stable technique in unscripted speaking; consistent pleasant tone under pressure.

Daily Plan (Mon–Fri)
  • Warm-up (5′): breath → hum → “ma-mo-mu-me-mi”.
  • Accent Tune-up (4′): choose 2 personal “tricky pairs” and 1 linking pattern.
  • Task Simulation (8′): pick one:
    • Client call: 60-sec update + 2 Q&A
    • Presentation opener: 90-sec intro
    • Interview question: “Tell me about yourself.”
  • Reflection (3′): re-record, note 1 technical + 1 tone improvement.
Performance Tips
  • Soft Onsets: start phrases gently (avoid hard “attack”).
  • Pitch Lifts: small upward inflections to keep energy friendly.
  • Reset Button: if you tighten, pause, inhale nasal-softly, resume.
Final Recording (Thu/Fri)
  • Read 60 sec of neutral text (news) + 60 sec spontaneous summary.
  • Compare to Day-1: clarity, warmth, flow, confidence.

Core Drills & Material (Use Any Week)

Minimal Pairs (Accent)

  • ship / sheep · live / leave · bit / beat · full / fool
  • bag / beg · bad / bed · cot / caught · luck / lock
  • light / right · long / wrong · thin / then · vine / wine

Linking & Reductions

  • want to → wanna · going to → gonna · got to → gotta
  • link consonant→vowel: “pick it up”, “send it over”

Resonance & Tone (Voice)

  • NG-Hum Slides: “sing→ng” hold, slide low→mid, release to vowel without losing buzz.
  • Half-Smile Reading: brightens timbre instantly (don’t force volume).
  • S-Count: steady “ssss” 12–20 s; repeat ×3 (airflow discipline).
  • Color Lines: say “Thank you for your time” as calm / warm / confident.

Neutral Reading Passages

Use these for recording/shadowing if you don’t have material handy.

Passage A (60–80 s)

“Today we reviewed our project timeline and identified two items that need attention. The first is the data import, which depends on a vendor update. The second is our onboarding guide, which requires clearer examples. We’ll finish the draft by Thursday and send it for feedback.”

Passage B (60–80 s)

“This morning, the service briefly slowed down due to higher-than-expected traffic. We scaled capacity, cleared a configuration mismatch, and monitored performance for thirty minutes. The system is stable now, and we’ll share a short post-incident summary this afternoon.”

Progress Tracker

Daily Checklist

Weekly Review

  • What sounds are “automatic” now?
  • Where does tension still appear?
  • What feedback did listeners give?
  • One focus for next week: /r/ pace linking

Coaching Notes

  • Don’t push volume: increase breath energy, not throat effort.
  • Short, frequent reps: 5 clean minutes beats 20 fatigued minutes.
  • One change at a time: vowel → consonant → rhythm → melody → performance.
  • Carry-over cue: the moment speech gets “hard,” pause, inhale softly, smile with eyes, continue.
Built for practical daily use. Adapt times as needed (but keep the order: breath → resonance → accent → shadowing → apply).
