Yoga English – Health & Wellbeing

Flexibility, Strength, Posture, Stress, Sleep, Recovery & Healthy Routines

Learn the English you need to talk about physical wellbeing, healthy routines, exercise, recovery, stress and the ways Yoga can form part of everyday life.

Talking about health and wellbeing in English

Yoga gives us a natural starting point for talking about the body, health and everyday wellbeing.

A simple conversation about Yoga might begin with flexibility.

Are you more flexible than when you started?

But this can quickly lead to other questions.

Has your posture changed? Do you feel stronger?

Do you recover more quickly after exercise?

Does Yoga help you sleep? Does it help you deal with stress?

These are useful questions because they allow us to practise English that is relevant far beyond Yoga.

We use words such as strength, flexibility, posture, tension, recovery, routine, sleep, energy, stress and wellbeing.

We also need language to describe change.

My flexibility has improved.

I've become stronger.

I don't feel as stiff in the morning as I used to.

And we need language to talk about habits and routines.

I try to practise three times a week.

I usually stretch before I go to bed.

I've started taking more breaks during the working day.

Health and wellbeing also give us opportunities to practise careful language.

We can say that something helps us, seems to help or that we feel better after doing it, without making exaggerated medical claims.

Yoga seems to help me relax, but I think walking and getting enough sleep are just as important.

The subject can then widen again.

What makes a healthy routine? How important is sleep? Why is regular exercise difficult for many people? What happens to our priorities as we get older?

Yoga is the starting point. English becomes the language we use to explore health, habits and everyday life.

From Yoga to everyday wellbeing

Yoga gives us a starting point for talking about much more than poses and movements.

We can talk about flexibility, strength, posture, stress, sleep, recovery and everyday habits.

We can describe what has changed, what seems to help, what we find difficult and what we would like to improve.

And from there, the conversation can move into wider questions about ageing, work, lifestyle, motivation and quality of life.

Once again, Yoga provides the subject – and English becomes the language through which we explore it.
