Yoga English – Breathing & Relaxation

Breathe, Relax, Release Tension, Slow Down & Become More Aware

Learn the English vocabulary and expressions used to talk about breathing, relaxation, tension, calm, concentration and body awareness.

Talking about breathing and relaxation in English

Breathing and relaxation give us another rich area in which Yoga and everyday English come together.

Breathing is something we do continuously, but we do not normally think about the language we use to describe it.

In Yoga, breathing becomes more conscious. We talk about breathing in, breathing out, taking a deep breath, breathing slowly, holding the breath and releasing the breath.

The basic vocabulary is simple: breathe in, breathe out, inhale, exhale, breath, deep, slow, gentle and calm.

But these simple words quickly lead to more interesting English.

My breathing feels slower and more relaxed.

I can feel the tension leaving my shoulders.

When I concentrate on my breathing, I find it easier to relax.

Why does slow breathing often make us feel calmer?

A simple Yoga topic can therefore become a much wider English conversation about stress, concentration, sleep, work, emotions, health and modern life.

The aim is not only to learn words connected with breathing. It is to develop the English you need to describe sensations, experiences, changes and ideas.
