English Through Your Interests

Learn English Through Yoga

Talk about Yoga, your experiences and the things that interest you – and develop your English naturally.

Instead of learning English through unrelated textbook topics, we use Yoga, movement, wellbeing and your own experiences as starting points for real conversation.

English through talking about Yoga – and more

In our English lessons, we talk about you – your life, your experiences, your interests, your opinions and the things you enjoy doing.

If Yoga is one of those interests, it gives us a fascinating world of things to talk about.

How did you first become interested in Yoga?

What do you enjoy most about your Yoga practice?

Has Yoga changed the way you think about movement, health or relaxation?

We can talk about your experiences with Yoga, different exercises and movements, breathing, relaxation, concentration, flexibility, balance, strength, health, philosophy and personal development.

But we don't have to stop with Yoga.

A conversation about Yoga can naturally lead us into health, stress, India, meditation, psychology, ageing, philosophy, culture or modern life.

What could we talk about?

There is no rigid programme. Your interests, experiences and curiosity help determine where the conversation goes.

1

Your Yoga

When you started, why you practise, how often you practise, your favourite exercises, teachers and your own experiences.

2

Movement & the Body

Balance, flexibility, strength, posture, coordination, stretching and how different movements feel.

3

Breathing

Breathing techniques, relaxation, concentration and the relationship between breathing and movement.

4

Health & Wellbeing

Exercise, stress, sleep, recovery, ageing, physical wellbeing and healthy everyday routines.

5

Yoga & Philosophy

Mindfulness, awareness, discipline, balance, meditation and some of the ideas behind Yoga.

6

Yoga & the World

India, history, culture, travel, modern Yoga and the way Yoga has developed internationally.

One question can start a whole conversation

Learning doesn't always have to begin with a vocabulary list or a grammar exercise. It can begin with one simple question.

Do you do Yoga?

Yes. I normally practise two or three times a week.

Why did you start?

I wanted to become more flexible and reduce stress.

Has it helped?

Yes. I'm definitely more flexible, but I think the biggest difference is that I've learnt to relax more.

Why do you think breathing helps us relax?

I think concentrating on the breath helps me slow down and become more aware of what is happening in my body.

Do you think modern life makes it difficult for people to slow down?

We started with a simple question about Yoga.

A few minutes later, we are talking about physical health, stress, breathing, awareness and modern life.

At the same time, you have naturally used the Present Simple, Past Simple, Present Perfect, comparisons, vocabulary, opinions and explanations.

Follow your curiosity

Real conversations move. One idea creates another question, and that question opens another subject.

The English grows with the conversation

The more you want to say, the more language you need. Vocabulary and grammar develop because you need them to communicate your own ideas.

Describe

Describe an exercise, movement, experience, physical sensation or feeling.

Explain

Explain how something works or why you think a particular practice is useful.

Compare

Compare Yoga with Pilates, fitness, Aikido, meditation or other activities.

Tell Stories

Talk about your first lesson, a teacher, an experience or something that surprised you.

Give Opinions

Say what you think and learn to explain, develop and support your point of view.

Ask Questions

Use English to discover something new about a subject that genuinely interests you.

From Yoga English to English through knowledge

This is where the idea becomes particularly interesting.

You are not simply learning a list of English words connected with Yoga.

You are using English to think, ask questions, exchange ideas and discover more about a subject.

Yoga gives us the starting point.

Curiosity gives us the questions.

English gives us the language to explore them.

That is the principle behind learning English through knowledge.

Don't just learn English. Use English.

You don't have to stop talking about the things that interest you in order to study English.

Talk about them in English.

As we talk, we work with the vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and expressions you need to communicate your own ideas.

English gradually changes from something you are learning into something you are using.

And it doesn't have to be Yoga

Yoga is just one possible starting point.

The same approach can be used with Aikido, music, history, geography, technology, science, nature, energy, medicine, culture and philosophy.

The important thing is that the subject gives you something you genuinely want to talk about, understand or explore.
