How It Works

  1. Jump up in pitch on the stressed word and make it longer and louder.
  2. Fall on that word.
  3. Stay low and quiet on all the words after it – they’re “old news”.
Neutral stress is on the last content word: I never said she took my BOOK. Any other position adds a contrast – the listener hears “not X, but something else”.
